In a surprising turn of events, a leaked email has revealed that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi “Sim” Fubara recently reached out to Russian President Vladimir Putin, seeking military and strategic support against what he described as “unprovoked attacks” by former Governor Nyesom Wike and, by extension, the administration of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.
In the leaked communication, Governor Fubara reportedly expressed concern over escalating political tensions and alleged threats to his administration. He promised Russia an extensive crude oil supply as a form of gratitude for potential support, reportedly offering an eight-year partnership for exclusive access to Rivers State’s crude resources.
The conflict, which has disrupted key operations, has led to Fubara’s government reportedly suspending operations of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and several other oil companies within Rivers State, causing a significant economic downturn in the region. With a primary focus on ensuring the stability and security of his administration, Fubara’s appeal to Russia signals a deepening crisis in Nigerian politics, drawing international attention and raising questions about the role of foreign influence in Nigeria’s internal affairs.
