Breaking: Chief Justice of Nigeria Orders Immediate Repatriation of Nnamdi Kanu to Kenya, Said She Has Wash Her Hands Off From The Case
In a groundbreaking decision, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has ordered the immediate repatriation of Nnamdi Kanu to Kenya, condemning the manner in which he was brought back to Nigeria. In a formal letter addressed to the Kenyan government, she also issued an apology for what she described as Nigeriaโs “unruly behavior” in Kanuโs extradition.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, who recently assumed office as Nigeriaโs Chief Justice, made it clear that she lacks the jurisdiction to preside over Kanuโs case due to the illegality of his extradition.
โNnamdi Kanu was forcefully brought back to Nigeria in violation of international law and Kenyan law. On what legal basis can I proceed with this case? It is a mockery of justice, an insult to my profession, and to the years of academic and legal expertise I have built,โ she declared.
She further explained that Justice Binta Nyako, who previously handled the case, withdrew from it due to its volatile nature.
โThis case is a suicide missionโa ticking time bomb waiting to explode. The world is watching. Any misstep from my end will not only destroy my legacy but will also tarnish the reputation I have built over the years. I will not allow my children to be insulted around the world because of how I handle this case,โ she stated.
Justice Kekere-Ekun emphasized that Kanuโs case is no longer just a Nigerian matter but an international issue.
If Nigeria wishes to prosecute him, it must send a valid request to the country where he resides. If that country legally extradites him, then we can talk. But for now, I wash my hands off this case and order his immediate return to Kenyaโwithout delay and without conditions,โ she ruled.
