Abuja – Visibly angry tricycle drivers popularly known as Keke NAPEP who were not happy with the removal of illegal park and mechanics workshop at the interchange in Nyanya on Thursday attacked the Chairman of the FCT Ministerial Task Team on traffic-free flow Mr Ikharo Attah.
The exercise which was to rid off the highway off services nuisance went well before the angry mob attacked the driver and the vehicle as the mob began to throw stones at the team including journalists covering the exercise.
Our reporter gathered at sports that the Keke NAPEP drivers and others have turned the place to illegal mechanics workshop, cooking and selling foods.
Speaking with journalists after the exercise, the Chairman FCT Task Team, Ikharo Attah who was not disturbed by the development maintained that clearing Abuja off traffic gridlock is a must achieved task.
According to him, “the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello is ready to give them a good place but you cannot have a mechanic shop at the interchange which will deface the city.
“I think for some of us who have been in this city, we have understood that if you must clean this city you must learn to take a tough decision and also consider the people’s interest. If you look at the car, the stone that was thrown at the car, you could see how big it is. That notwithstanding, I think We are not going to give up on the city like I always tell people Abuja is our project and Abuja must work.
“When you people interview the Chairman said what they are doing was wrong, where they are operating was wrong, the Mechanic workshop at the interchange is defacing the city. If they all agree to this and yet they still want to be there shows that some of them have taking oaths by their ancestral grave to destroy the city.
“If we sustain this going forward they will soon get used to it that you don’t come to Abuja and mess up the city. Maybe because we have relaxed for too long, now that the Minister is keen and determined said we must rid Abuja of all nuisance and all that paint the city in a bad light”, he stressed.
The Head of operations Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) Kaka Bello, also assured that the place would be handed over to Parks and Recreation, FCT Administration.
According to him FCT is very important to Nigerians than to leave it in the hands of few to go down.
It would be recalled that three weeks ago the task team gave the tricycles riders one week ultimatum to relocate from the place.
