The Presidential Technical Team deployed to Kano to support the state committee in upscaling its response to COVID-19, on Sunday, has confirmed claims by former Governor of Kano State, Musa Kwankwaso, alleging in a letter to president Muhammadu Buhari that COVID-19 is the actual cause of mass deaths in the State as observed recently.
Part of Kwankwaso’s letter read, “Permit me, Mr. President, to draw your attention to the spike in mystery deaths among the aged population in Kano State in the last couple of weeks. Hundreds of funerals have been recorded in all the cemeteries of the eight metropolitan local governments alone.
“Looking at the pattern elsewhere in the world where senior citizens with preexisting conditions were the main fatalities of the novel coronavirus, we are concerned that the inability to conduct tests in the state to determine the status of these senior citizens might be responsible for their death.
“We are even more concerned that if sincere and efficient machinery is not urgently put in place to understand and mitigate against this, more lives of innocent senior citizens will be lost.
“I should inform Mr. President that since the announcement of the positive results of the members of the committee, no test was ever conducted in the entire state again. This is very frightening as neither asymptomatic nor active cases are being identified and isolated, as such carriers of this dreaded virus are all about and spreading it and causing the untimely death of especially our senior citizens.”
The President responded to Kwankwaso’s letter by sending a Technical Team to investigate the situation.
Now, leader of the team, Dr Nasiru Sani Gwarzo, disclosed in an interview with journalists in Kano during the official presentation and handing over of the mobile testing laboratory donated by Aliko Dangote Foundation to the state government, that covid-19 is responsible for spike in recent deaths especially with respect to the elderly.
He explained that the recent spike in deaths in the state was as a result of coronavirus. Dr Gwarzo said after the verbal autopsy and test carried out, it had been established that COVID-19 is the cause of most of the deaths.
Part of the terms of reference given to the team by President Muhammadu Buhari was to unravel the real cause of the reported unprecedented daily deaths being recorded in the State.
According to Gwarzo: “With the preliminary report, most of the deaths recorded of recent and test carried out indicated that coronavirus is the cause.
“Hence, before the final report which would be ready in the next one week or few days, it is necessary for people of the state to wake up from their slumber that this is a serious issue at hand.”
The Kano State government had earlier denied the mysterious deaths being recorded within the state capital. But residents of the city continue to live in fear as more burials take place daily.
This led to President Buhari to declare a total lockdown of the State last week while also sending in a technical team to find out the reason for the mass deaths. Kano presently has the second highest COVID-19 cases in the country after Lagos State.
Meanwhile, more covid-19 cases has been recorded in the past 24 hours.
