Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President, has agreed that Godwin Obaseki, the Governor of Edo State, emerges as the flag-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, ahead of the Edo State Governorship election.
Page 36 learnt that Atiku Abubakar contacted Obaseki on Friday, after he was disqualified from participating in the All Progressives Congress, APC, primary election for the September 19, Governorship election in the State.
The former Vice President, who was the PDP Candidate in the last Presidential election, is also making way for a “soft landing”, for Obaseki to emerge as the Governorship Candidate of the PDP in the State.
Although, the PDP constitution requires any member of the party seeking for an elective position under its platform, to at least be registered for 18 months, it however, gives room for a waiver.
A source revealed that Atiku discussed Obaseki’s Governorship ticket with some Governors in the PDP.
“The Waziri (of Adamawa Emirate, which Atiku was turbaned in 2018), has wooed Obaseki to PDP. He spoke with him yesterday, on the phone, and encouraged him”, the source said.
“He also spoke to some of the PDP Governors, and urged them to give him a soft landing, and access to the party and pick the ticket.”
Crusoe Osagie, Governor Obaseki’s Spokesman, did not immediately respond to enquiries on the issue when he was contacted on Saturday.
Nonetheless, it was learnt that the PDP has been waiting in the wings for the APC crisis to boil over, so that it can provide a platform for Obaseki.
