Fasipe
Apostle Anthony Fasipe, the General Overseer of Pavilion of Faith Global Church, Ikeja, in this chat with CHINYERE ABIAZIEM, during a colloquium to mark his 65th birthday, spoke on why God called him to establish a Church at the age of 60. The Clergy also talked on success tips especially for the youths and why Christians should focus on discipleship instead of making merchandise of the gospel. Excerpts:
Celebrating 65 years is quite a milestone; how has life been with you?
In life you don’t win all; you win some you lose some, but what is important is that you win more. We give glory to God.
What is your assessment of today’s Nigerian society and the world generally?
As the topic of the maiden colloquium to mark my birthday, ‘Rebuilding the Broken Society’ says, the society is broken down and we can’t lie about it. There are too many things that are wrong in the country. There are too many things that need to be fixed in the country and like I said, life is a process and if you want to fix anything, you start with the process. Just follow the process; it doesn’t matter how long the process will take. Hear this, if you are going to the north and you face the south no matter how fast you can run, you will never get there. But if you are crawling and you take the right direction, no matter how long it takes you will get to where you are going.
Can you share the principles that have kept you going?
There are four things that I believe make a man. One, the background of the man; that is to say the family where he comes from will influence the life the man will live. Two, the society the man grows up in. You see the society has a lot to do in moulding the character of a man. Third, the friends that he keeps; there is a saying that the people you move around with always have a way of influencing what you become today. So in my own opinion, I think it is very important that parents should pay close attention to their children upbringing, the family friends they have and also the area or society they live in. If you notice, the society you are leaving in is not good enough. So please remove your children or family from that environment. Fourth, the intrusive value that God has created in that man. To me there are so many principles people can live with but these are the four main principles people can live with. You can live with the godly principle. You can live a societal principle because you know in the society it gets to a certain age and people expect you be married. That is the society for you. I don’t think marriage is what someone should rush in; I think marriage should be carefully planned and one should look forward to God to be able to select a good partner. When I was growing up, the picture our parents in Nigeria painted was ‘yes this is my son a lawyer, this is my son he’s a doctor, this is my son he’s an accountant’. These days parents don’t ask their children where they got the car they drive as far as they are driving a car; nobody asks them where they get the money to buy a house in Lekki. When I came to this country some years back someone told me that men like me are needed in the ministry. We are not going into the ministry because we want to make money, God has already blessed you, and so you can stand tall. That is why God has brought most of us at this time so that when we see things that are not right, we could speak against them. Nigeria is still going to be okay; it will take time and process because it can’t just change overnight. A woman doesn’t have a child overnight; it takes her nine months to carry a baby.
What is your advice for the youths?
Every youth that I have come across is impatient and I mean it with all sincerity. When I was young I went to school about 10 miles away from my house and I walk back every day. It was so many years that I did that. When I look at the distance from my house to school, I begin to wonder how on earth could I make it and I walked every day for four years. The distance was far but the dedication and the diligence never made it too far, so the youths of this country should learn that life is a process. The first thing they need to do is to put their life into a process. They want to make wealth without going through the process; they want to make it through jumping. When you jump, you break your legs. The process is that if you want to go to school, you go to school at the right time. Then if you want to pick up a job, pick it up and by doing that job over time, the Lord will begin to bless you and you don’t need to compare yourself with anyone. That I have a particular car at my age does not mean a guy of 25 will want to ride the same car.

Some people believe that the Church is a way of making money but I don’t think so. Someone told me, ‘sir you are starting your Church at 60, while some of us are thinking of running away from the ministry, why?’ I was highly motivated by that question and I began to see why God has actually called me. My purpose is not to make money. To build people up for the church is an institution. If your intention is to build people up, the people that you build up will eventually build other people up and with that you impact the society. You might get frustrated if you are not truly called of God but if God indeed called you, He will make a way for you.
