Emerging report indicates that the Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, will today, Friday, hold an emergency meeting in Abuja, over the ruling of the Supreme Court on Wednesday, on the immediate-past Ondo State
Governorship election.Recall, that the Supreme Court judgement on the Ondo State Governorship election involving Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of the APC, and Eyitayo Jegede of the
Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had attracted major controversies. The Justices at the Apex Court had reportedly unanimously agreed that it is illegal for Mai Mala Buni to be the Governor of Yobe State, and also hold an elective position as the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the APC.They agreed on the constitutional point that a sitting Governor cannot hold the dual elective position of Governor and party National Chairman.
However, the majority of the Justices (4-3) dismissed Jegede’s appeal, over his failure to add the APC Chairman as a Defendant in the suit. The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, reacting, had called on the APC to stop its scheduled nationwide Congresses.
It was gathered that following the controversies that greeted the ruling party, the Governors will meet today, to discuss the State and Local Government Congresses holding on Saturday.
The Chairman of the APC in Borno State and Chairman of the party’s Chairmen Forum, Ali Bukar Dalori, who gave the hint in an interview, in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, stated that the outcome of the meeting would determine whether or not the party would go ahead with the State and Local Government Congresses, scheduled to start tomorrow, Saturday. When asked if the party is going ahead with the Congresses, Dalori stated: “You know I am a loyal party man; the party communicated to us to continue with preparations for the Congresses, pending the outcome of their meeting.
“The State Governors are meeting today, so I cannot categorically say whether we will hold the Congresses, or they will say we should postpone them.
“The Governors have converged in Abuja, for an emergency meeting. After that meeting, we will know the position of the party, and the direction they want to follow. Do not worry, by today, we shall know what is going to happen.”
