A former presidential candidate, Obadiah Mailafia, has described Nigeria as a dead horse who can’t work no matter how you flog it. He said the current state of the country should not surprise anyone because it is the fruit of failure since Buhari came to power in 2015.The former Deputy Governor of the CBN, had made a handful of controversial claims that fortunately, wasn’t found to be far from the truth, and which according to him, culminated to the nation’s current woes. One of his most controversial claims came in 2020, where he said one of North’s Governors, is the sponsor of Boko Haram, and that Boko Haram and the bandits ravaging the country are one and the same.He said, “Some of us also have our intelligence networks. I have met with some of the bandits; we have met with some of their high commanders – one or two who have repented – they have sat down with us not once, not twice.“They told us that one of the northern governors is the commander of Boko Haram in Nigeria. Boko Haram and the bandits are one and the same. They have a sophisticated network. During this lockdown their planes were moving up and down as if there was no lockdown.“They were moving ammunition, moving money, and distributing them across different parts of the country.”Well, that claim wasn’t far from the truth following reports of helicopters caught or sighted, supplying arms and provisions to bandits. The recent impounded helicopter is believed to be belong to a former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, although he debunked reports linking him with the helicopter. In a statement through his spokesperson, Abdulsalami said, “This kind of fake news has the potential of aggravating the already tense security situation in the country and should not be condoned,’’ he stressed.“I urge Nigerians to ignore such treacherous acts and to be careful with the kind of information they dish out or share on social media,’’ he stated. In another claim, Mailafia Boko Haram had already infiltrated southern Nigeria. He said, “They are already in the South, in the rain forests of the South. They are everywhere.”This claim is also not far from the truth as current happenings in the middlebelt and southern parts of the country both east and west would show.In fact, an anonymous source from the southeast in a recent phone conversation with National Pivot, said those terrorizing the southeast aren’t even members of IPOB or ESN. He said the last thing IPOB or ESN would do, is to destabilise their own region, and suggests that terrorists or those unknown gunmen as they are called, were likely members of Boko Haram or ISWAP who somehow found their way into the South East.Should that be proven to be true, this also vindicates Mailafia, who had to flee for his life, as the DSS went after him for his claims.Mailafia also made other claims saying he was convinced that some foreign powers were behind the bandits.“There are certain world powers that want to destroy our country. That is what I believe. There was a container load of weapons that were brought in from Turkey. Another time some were brought in from Iran. But nobody probed further and everything was swept under the carpet and that was the end of it,” he said.Lastly, in a statement yesterday (Friday), during an interview with Punch, the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria said, Nigeria has been a failed state since 2015, and is already broken. While responding on secessionists’ calls in the country, Mailafia said, “Do you want an honest answer or do you want a political answer? The honest answer is that the country is already broken up spiritually.“Talk to any Nigerian. Do Nigerians feel that they are part of the same country right now? We have become strangers to each other.“It is just like marriages. People start fighting each other and the other one doesn’t see anything good in the other. The divorce only comes much later but, in the spirit, you would have divorced a long time ago before the ramshackle marriage ends up in the court where they sign papers for divorce.”
