Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State on Monday disclosed that the state government owned Giginya Microfinance Bank has commenced operation in the state.
In a statement on Monday, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the governor, Muhammed Bello, said the governor made the disclosure while receiving a delegation of the national Islamic finance committee of Indonesia, KNKS, at Government House, Sokoto.
Mr Tambuwal thanked the delegation for their return visit, pointing out that the Sokoto state government delegation visited Indonesia in July during which the state learned a lot from the county’s Islamic micro finance model.
He, therefore, expressed optimism that when the model is entrenched would go a long way in alleviating poverty while empowering the people of the state.
Earlier, the head of the KNKS’s delegation, Jameel Abbas said they were in the state to look into the possibility of implementing the Indonesia Islamic finance institutions established 25 years ago.
Mr Abbas explained that about 3million Indonesians have benefited from the scheme within more than two decades of its operations.
