Salary racketeers in Sokoto State have been given 12-day ultimatum to come forward and confess or risk prosecution.
The state government said it would offer “amnesty” and guarantee confidentiality for those who beat the deadline.
A statement Wednesday by the Steering Committee on Integrated Payroll and Internally Generated Revenue said anyone who shows up for confession between November 27 and December 9 is guaranteed the pardon of the state.
The committee said it has unravelled a lot of wrongdoings, including but not limited to ghost workers, wrong computation of salaries, and inappropriate and inflated implementation of salaries.
“The Sokoto State Government wishes to inform the public that the steering committee on Integrated Payroll and Internally Generated Revenue was established to integrate the state payroll and improve Internally Generated Revenue.
“In the course of the committee activities, a lot of wrongdoings have been discovered, including but not limited to ghost workers, wrong computation of salaries, and inappropriate and inflated implementation of certain cadres of civil servants.
“The government has therefore instituted an amnesty initiative to enable civil servants collecting salaries they don’t earn and those engaged in improper practices against regulations to come forward and own up, under strict confidentiality and guarantee of state pardon.
“The period of the amnesty will commence today, November 27, to December 9, 2019, by 12 midnight. Government is therefore calling on those concerned to avail themselves of this initiative. At the end of this period, appropriate sanction will be meted out on those found wanting in accordance with Civil Service Rules and relevant Laws.
“Similarly, civil servants or members of the public with relevant information that can assist in the discovery and/or resolution of problems in the payroll system are invited to approach the committee, with the assurance of confidentiality and reward where appropriate.
