The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has on Wednesday, called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Usman Alkali, for the illegal detention of 21-year old Gloria Okolie,
HURIWA reportedly wants the National Anti-Human Trafficking Agency, NAPTIP, to arrest IGP Baba, and investigate him, over the alleged disappearance and enslavement of the young lady from Imo State.
It also appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to call the Police and Department of State Security Services, DSS, to order, warning that their continuous refusal to obey the constitutional rights of detainees, may lead to imminent collapse of the country’s democracy.
HURIWA called for the IGP’s arrest in reaction to what it described as “the continuous mistreatment, gross dehumanisation, and unmitigated abuses of the rights of the Lawyers to the detained Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu”.
It stated that the failure of the Police to release Gloria Okolie on bail as recently directed by a competent court of Law, says a lot about the total disrespect for section 6 of the 1999 Constitution by the IGP.
HURIWA said that it is disappointed with the Police under IGP Baba, for flouting the clear order of the court of competent jurisdiction, on matters affecting the young lady.
HURIWA noted also that the Police’s consistent inclination to disobey the competent court of law, is a grave threat to constitutional democracy, and must be stopped.
It stressed that ordinarily, the IGP ought to be arrested and prosecuted, for allegedly keeping the young lady away from her parents and Lawyers for over 75 days, and for the fact that she was purportedly converted to a maid for the Police, allegedly.
